Dr. Shailaja Paik’s proposal to the University Research Council’s Faculty Grant, 2011-12 was selected for funding. With this fellowship she will visit Mumbai to obtain more records on Dalit efforts for education in Marathi (her mother tongue) housed in private archives of Dalit individuals and re-visit newspapers at the Asiatic Society, Mumbai. With this research she will revise two chapters of her monograph. Chapter One focuses on the social and historical context of Dalits’ (or “Untouchables”) struggle for civic rights, including education in urban Maharashtra (Western India) during the early twentieth century. Chapter Two focuses on Dalit philosophies of education as they critiqued upper-caste, middle-class agenda of education.
